Although it opened up just a month after Walt Disney opened his park in Anaheim, California, the Enchanted Forest in Ellicott City, Maryland, never achieved the same universal exaltation as Disneyland. (Or its gaudy sequel, Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.)
These days, the ill-fated park sits abandoned in a suburban forest in Baltimore, and it”s done so since its closing in 1988. The only visitors it gets are local stoners, and the nobles that inhabit its castles are pissed-off raccoons.
This is what the entrance to the Enchanted Forest looked like in 1987, 32 years after it opened in 1955, and one year before it closed.

Not a good sign when the ruler of your forest kingdom has to flip signs on the highway for minimum wage.
The desolation makes you wonder what the area would”ve been like if Orlando hadn”t beaten out Ellicott City as the most magical place on Earth. Would athletes be shouting, “I”m going to the Enchanted Forest!” after they won the World Series? Who knows…
